Empress Ballroom
Blackpool, England

Soundboard
This unreleased mix is the best live bootleg by the Stone Roses. A concert that was legendary at the time and is regarded even more so now, as one of the defining moments in live rock history, with everyone claiming to have been there. Stand in line for a solo Ian Brown show or the reformed Roses and you will hear the statement "I was at Blackpool in '89". I can't claim I was there unfortunately, but my moment of infamy came a year later when I turned down an offer to go and see them play live in a tent. (groan!)

The first massive gig the Roses ever played, and some would say their best. 4,000 people packed into the Empress Ballroom (which was usually used for press conferences and trade fairs) and danced the night away - after the band’s crew had kicked open the doors, prompting a massive rush in. The crowd got seriously overheated, and John, Mani and Reni threw ice pops into the crowd when they came on stage.
During the day, Blackpool was flooded with people wearing flares and Reni hats, enjoying a day out, which they continued in the Ballroom, bringing beachballs in to chuck around. Ian later on said that Blackpool was the moment he knew the band had made it.
The energy in this performance is phenomenal! I'm enjoying this very much - thank for posting it.
ReplyDeleteFully deserving it's legendary status, James, just wish i'd been there.
ReplyDeleteBummer this is so hard to find.. had to extract the soundtrack from a poor video torrent to listen to it.
