Trevor Nelson began his broadcasting career in 1985 when Kiss FM was a pirate radio station. He moved to BBC Radio 1 in 1996 to present the first ever national RNB show ‘The Rhythm Nation’ and stayed with Radio 1 until 2013.
On July 9, 2016 he began presenting Rhythm Nation on Saturday evenings on BBC Radio 2, replacing his Wednesday evening soul show. The advertising for the show ran as follows:

In its current time slot (Monday-Thursday 22:00–0:00) and format, the show has been running since January 2019. The first half hour is titled Trevor Nelson’s Magnificent 7. Thirty minutes of the biggest hits, uplifting tunes and essential throwbacks. The final hour and a half is titled Trevor Nelson’s Rhythm Nation, soul, RB, funk, disco and everything in between.
The
show features three significant features: Trevor's signature game, 5 Seconds to
Name, He'll play you a musical mash-up from one act and you must identify who
it is. Secondly each night on the show, a return to your Musical Youth with your story and the song that transports you back to a memorable time in your life. Finally listen to Lights Down.
