Virtually all of the bootlegs on the 100 greatest bootlegs blog have been sourced from the original downloaded files on my hard drives. This is an exception and has been ripped from the cdr I burnt circa 2007-08. The original files were acquired from the old 'Tape City' torrent site, now long gone.
This is my favourite Bunnymen bootleg. It has circulated on a silver disc which has inferior quality, noise reduction was used on it and ruined the sound. There is a touch of hiss here, noticeable between songs, but overall the quality is superb with clear pounding bass and sparkling guitar. 'Do It Clean' the best version ever? You decide!

Note: Crocodiles cuts out 2:30 before the end of the track. Does anyone have the complete track from this source (Tape City torrent site)
Love the Bunnymen, and I'm sure I'm going to love this. Truly a great band at their peak.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Don't forget to turn the bass and the volume up!
DeleteBunnymen loved reverb when live, glad to see they turned it down on this one. Great stereo on this one.
ReplyDeletethank you...yes the band at its peak. and with its stellar rhythm section still intact.
ReplyDeleteRIP pete defrietas.
yes many thanks for this gem; it sounds fantastic (could it be a pre-FM - there's no drop-off in frequency response typical of FM b'casts) and yes captures the band at its creative peak and with its formidable rhythm section still intact. (RIP pete defrietas)
ReplyDeleteI saw them for the first time on this tour - with the band lined up across the front of the stage (much like floyd circa 73-77). before the mainstreamy hits of the band's self-titled follow-up (to ocean rain) the band was still something of an underground act, dark and psychedelic.
thanks again.
The only info I could find about lineage is the following:
DeleteMaster soundboard tape > ? > CD > Samsung SW-232B extraction (EAC v0.9 beta 4) > tracking (CD Wave) > sector boundary verification (shntool v1.01) > .flac encoding
EAC > FLAC by Jack Warner (jackmw1ATsbcglobalDOTnet)
So yes, you could be right.
Shame track 9 is clipped. Is that the download or is the original like that.
ReplyDeleteTrack 9 (Crocodiles), it's not complete...
ReplyDeleteGreat band, great recording! As the other comments said Track 9 is incomplete(corrupt file?)If this could be re-posted,would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work!
DeleteUnfortunately Crocodiles cuts at around 4:17, it's like that on my copy too.
DeleteI do not have the original files on HD and haven't seen this version circulate since the days of 'Tape City'. There is a silver disc bootleg which has inferior quality but may have the complete track. I don't have it so cannot provide a patched version at the moment.
This would be good to have with it.

Live Sun Plaza Hall Tokyo
January 18, 1984
Notice how the first five tracks are tagged a little differently than the other ones.
ReplyDeleteAlso notice how the first four tracks of the unofficial vinyl release ostensibly from one day later are the same titles: "Over the Wall," "The Back of Love," "Stars Are Stars," "The Killing Moon."
And then, the only difference between this and the unofficial vinyl release is "All That Jazz" instead of "Monkeys" and "Do It Clean" instead of "Ripeness."
Could this be a vinyl rip?
Also, the unofficial vinyl release may not actually be from January 18. Look at the poster. It says "January 12, 16, and 17 (although not in that order).
ReplyDeleteThey may not have even played at Sun Plaza Hall Tokyo on January 18, 1984.
The majority of this bootleg is very likely from the same source as the unofficial vinyl release.
According to this site - http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/setlists/page5.html - Echo and the Bunnymen did play on January 18 at Sun Plaza.
ReplyDeleteSo, they probably played two nights in a row at Sun Plaza.
I wish I had that unreleased vinyl that's supposed to be from the 18th to compare with this boot from the 17th. I'm going to keep looking for that vinyl or a rip of it.
This bootleg from the 17th sounds excellent. Thank you for sharing it!
Your welcome Wilder.
ReplyDeleteRe the vinyl rip, sometime ago I had a bootleg silver disc copy of what I thought was this show. Your comments have me wondering if in fact it was a cd copy of the vinyl, hence the altered sound and noise reduction. I automatically thought it was just an inferior version of the show I had upped here. Perhaps it was that other date. Unfortunately I don't remember what site I downloaded it from and not long after I deleted it.
As the technology seems to be so far, when it comes to a choice between a little tape hiss and some 'noise reduction," I'll take a little tape hiss every time. Because when the music gets flowing, a little tape hiss is not very noticeable.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely AMAZING boot... you are truly living up to the name of this blog!! :) Thank you very much. I love Echo, have all their albums, some I've bought 2-3 times, and this is a really nice accompaniment. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteYes, great band, one of my favourites during the early 80's. Still got the records I bought at that time. Then I bought the cds before following up with the deluxe re-issues!
DeleteThank you so very much for this - amazing boot. I love Echo, so this is a real treat.
ReplyDeleteMmmmh... this looks really great. All my colours is one of my favourite songs ever. Downloading now and discovering it in the next hours.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this concert.
