#71 GENESIS - Wembley, London 1975 (Flac)

GENESIS
Empire Pool, Wembley,
London
5th April 1975.

THE COMPLETE BBC RADIO SHOW GEN750415TM
(First circulated March 2009)

Sourced from the master reels, the audio quality is stunning.

"One of the most bootlegged radio broadcasts in Genesis' history was recorded at the Empire Pool, Wembley. Genesis played two nights at Wembley and the BBC were contacted to record both nights. Some sources quote the recording date as 14th, but comparison with an audience tape from 15th shows the recording is from the second night. The proliferation of this show on bootleg is partly due to the large number of broadcasts it has received: at least three by the BBC; several world-wide broadcasts of a BC transcription LP; some King Biscuit broadcasts and numerous Westwood One airings.

The first broadcast on BBC's "In Concert" program, 12th July 1975 at 6:30 pm, was bootlegged by the classic "Awed Man Out" (TAKRL 1975 - LP), minus 'Watcher of the Skies'. The BBC pressed a quadrophonic LP to accompany the original broadcast, hosted by Brian Matthew and named "POP SPECTACULAR featuring Genesis In Concert". As often happens with BBC LP's this transcription differs from the corresponding UK broadcast: 'In The Cage' was added at the expense of 'Lilywhite Lilith' and splicing out a couple of chunks of 'The Waiting Room'. Although an encore, 'Watcher of the Skies' whenever broadcast is always the first track played. Curiously the final verse of 'In The Cage' present on the audience recording, is edited out of the broadcasts giving the impression Peter forgot the lyrics." (David Dunnington)

#70 KRAFTWERK - Numbers (Flac)

Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo, Japan
7th September, 1981
Kraftwerk  – Numbers

Kraftwerk will begin a short 8 date tour of the USA in September 2016, taking in North Bethesda, Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas, San Antonio, Phoenix, San Diego and LA. After coming back to Europe for a few weeks break they start an 8 show residency in Bilbao, Spain promoting the catalogue 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, on each respective night. In November they return to North America for two dates in Mexico City followed by dates in South America visiting the capital cities of Argentina and Chile.

The release of Computer World in 1981, was an album that explored the consequences of living in a society dominated by technology. This was in a time pre PC's, Laptops, the Internet and Mobile phones etc. Their music had not only been highly influential but the subject matter of this record was prescient in envisaging a future society highly dominated by technology.

35 years ago, Kraftwerk toured Japan in the first half of September 1981. This is the best quality show from that time, it's incomplete and missing the magnificent 'The Model' but is still an excellent audio document from the Computer World tour. There are also many audience recordings available from this tour and another FM broadcast, a 42 minute recording from Utrecht later in the year. It has three of the missing songs from this show: The Model, Radioactivity & Pocket Calculator but no 'Hall of Mirrors'.

This source ripped from the silver disc bootleg 'Numbers', released by Radioactive Records in 1992, has superior sound quality and is a massive upgrade. It’s worth checking to see if you have this one and not the inferior title ‘Virtu Ex Machina’ whose lack of clarity and muffled sound made me bin the cdr copy I had. I was initially dubious about downloading this thinking it would have the disappointing quality of the earlier title. For those without any Kraftwerk in their collection, start here you won’t be disappointed.

#69 STEELY DAN - Rainbow Theatre, London 1974 (Flac)

Rainbow Theatre
Finsbury Park,
London, England
20th May 1974

Steely Dan’s final headline tour occurred in 1974. Fortunately for their London fans they performed a two-night stand at the Rainbow Theatre.  The opening night is available in exquisite quality on this high fidelity recording.

The material is drawn principally from 1973’s ‘Countdown To Ecstasy’ and the new album Pretzel Logic. The hit singles Rikki Don’t Lose That Number and Reelin’ In The Years included here in expanded form would become two of their most enduring and instantly recognisable songs.

This show is regarded as one of their greatest ever-live performances. Following further dates in the USA, Steely Dan would quit live performance to concentrate on their studio work, splitting in the early 80’s before the release of ‘Gaucho’. It would be 1993 before they reformed and returned to the stage with only Becker and Fagen remaining from the previous band.

#68 PJ HARVEY - Europe 1993 (Flac)

P.J. Harvey – Europe 1993
Recorded live at the Forum in Kentish Town, London  on May 23, 1993

Following this tour in support of the release of the second album 'Rid Of Me,' Polly performed in mainland Europe and returned to the USA and Canada for her third tour of North America. July saw her debut appearance in Japan. A week after returning home she began a support slot on U2's Zoo TV tour, these were her first stadium appearances.

This show was released in 1993 on an Italian bootleg label Redline and sourced from an excellent BBC Radio One FM radio broadcast, recorded for the John Peel show. It was also released by Live Storm in 1994, again another Italian protection gap release. A loop-hole in the law was exploited by bootleg companies and these were regarded as official releases at the time, until the law was changed.

The included notes have been written by a staunch PJ Harvey fan who declares it as being up there with the all time great live albums such as Motorhead's No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith and the MC5's Kick Out The Jams. Unlike those it remains unreleased although some footage of the performance appeared in a long out of print VHS video tape. It's a stunning performance with a surprising first track for the unaware.

#67 JONI MITCHELL - The Hissing Of Summer Lawns Demos (Flac)

Joni Mitchell
Hissing Of Summer Lawns Acoustic Demos

Unreleased studio recordings
Spring 1975
Venue unknown, possibly A&M studios, Hollywood, CA
Running time 36:43

This is a repost, if you downloaded originally from here this is the same version. If you have downloaded this from elsewhere, check you have this upgraded version as it is superior quality compared to previous editions.

These unreleased demos and working versions appeared in a radically different finished form on the Hissing Of Summer Lawns released in November 1975.  On the album Joni had continued her change in musical direction begun on Court And Spark (1974), away from her folk stylings towards jazz and what we would now label world music.

The tracks recorded on these demos are performed mainly on acoustic guitar and piano, giving these stripped down versions a feel similar to the albums Blue, For The Roses (1972) and Hejira (1976). Missing from this collection of demos are The Jungle Line, Don't Interrupt The Sorrow and the album's title track The Hissing Of Summer Lawns. Of the nine tracks, two did not appear on the finished album, Dreamland was omitted and finally appeared on Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter (1977) in its completed form, Hunter is an outtake from perhaps Joni’s most famous and deeply personal album Blue (1971).

These demos also circulate as the Seeding Of Summer Lawns; same track-listing, different artwork, the version included here was pitch level and phase corrected by the Remasters Workshop, November 2009

1. Harry's House
2.  Edith and the Kingpin
3.  In France They Kiss on Main Street
4.  Sweet Bird
5.  Shades of Scarlett Conquering
6.  Shadows and Light
7.  Dreamland
8.  Boho Dance
9.  Hunter (The Good Samaritan) from Original Blue

Hissing Of Summer Lawns Acoustic Demos
Unreleased Studio Recordings

Lineage: Unknown, believed to be a bootleg LP pressing or sourced from a low gen cassette tape copy > DL'ed FLAC files > WaveLab 5 (fixed a few very small pops (skips) in a couple of tracks, smoothed and evened out the lead-in between a couple of tracks) > WAV > FLAC (level 8, align on sector boundaries) > TLH > Upload

From jmdl site:
Joni went into the studio in the spring of 1975 to record acoustic demos of some songs she'd written. These tapes included an early version of "Dreamland," a song that 2 years later would appear on the album 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter'.

A few months later she recorded band versions of the tunes with most of the same musicians she employed on 'Court And Spark'. This song cycle was released in November 1975 as the album 'The Hissing Of Summer Lawns'. The LP was a big seller and peaked at #4 on the Billboard album charts.

But, generally, the album was greeted less than enthusiastically. The fact that Joni had ceased being the confessional sin-eater, and had turned her razor sharp observations outwards to society, was not what fans and critics expected or wanted from her. This was probably the first time that an musical direction of Joni's had been questioned, and it really wounded her. She still talks today of the sting she felt at those bad reviews. But. in reality, there were also quite a few good notices for the album.

Joni joined up with Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review as it traveled thru North America, and she performed at a few shows in late November and early December including stops in Boston and Toronto.
Before Christmas 1975, plans began for a tour to promote 'The Hissing Of Summer Lawns', which was selling briskly. The L.A. Express were grabbed up and convinced to embark on a second tour with Mitchell to begin in January 1976.
often packaged with filler on bootleg versions, these are the demos only and they sound wonderful. I have included as a bonus the song "Hunter (The Good Samaritan)" originally scheduled for 'Blue' here, because it is the only track from "The Original Blue" that was never released. "Dreamland" later appeared on 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter' in a studio version, but the stripped down version here is especially appealing. The official album is one of Joni's underrated gems. Buy it and give it a second chance.
Thanks to Les Irvin webmaster at Joni Mitchell Discussion List for the files and for good trading and conversation.

A reviewer commented:
One thing that I thought was pretty neat was that in these original demos, Joni sings parts that would eventually be played by horns, and there’s no place more evident than in the demo of Edith and The Kingpin, where each verse is punctuated by an echoing chorus, harmonizing to simulate the horns to come!"

#66 NIRVANA - Pat O'Brien Pavilion, Del Mar, CA. 1991 (Flac)

The 2nd show of a short five-date tour on the US west coast with Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers. This show was professionally recorded to 24 track. The sound quality of this is superb, the mix is stunning with crystal-clear dynamics. Perfect to blast your ears with headphones on!

------------------------------------------------------

Nirvana
Pat O'Brien Pavilion, Del Mar CA.
December 28, 1991

Back in the States, Nirvana were on a triple-bill tour with Pearl Jam and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, playing relatively short sets. For one reason or another, the show in Del Mar was chosen to be recorded for a Westwood One radio broadcast.Wisely, Andy Wallace was hired again, and he did a fine job capturing and mixing this excellent performance.

The version featured here is a patchwork of various sources. Most of the show is available in perfect digital quality on various Westwood One promo CD's. However, they have made life difficult for the completist by adding fake crowd noise between many songs and throughout the first half of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". They also took the liberty of censoring the word "shit" from "Aneurysm". Thankfully, there is an internal Geffen promo cassette available to collectors. It sounds amazingly similar to the digital source, but has various dropouts and flaws. After some slight tweaks, it was used here for all the between-song crowd noise and for "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Now the show is 100% complete, free of dropouts that plague the promo cassette and the fake crowd noise that ruins parts of the digital promos. All of the source switches are seamless and undetectable.

Tracklisting:

 1. intro
 2. Drain You
 3. Aneurysm
 4. School
 5. Floyd The Barber
 6. Smells Like Teen Spirit
 7. About A Girl
 8. Polly
 9. Sliver
10. Breed
11. Come As You Are
12. Lithium
13. Territorial Pissings

From the lowest generation underground sources. There was no brickwalling, compression or noise reduction applied during mastering...only the speed, EQ and occasionally the balance was tweaked to achieve as close to a "perfect" version as possible.Original Tape Transfer by Mike Ziegler & Kris Sproul

16. So Cold In Ireland [4:41]
17. Empty [3:30]
18. Dreams [4:06]

(Playing Time: 72:12)

A set that has an unbalanced soundmix, that would sabotage it from ever seeing an official release, but the best tracks here have an intensity and rawness that are compelling and sadly lacking from the studio releases. The bass is extremely impressive here, high up in the mix with the vocals and drums. If you listen on headphones you won't get the full effect, it's one best heard through the air.

Dolores exhorts the crowd during Linger to “C’mon sing” in the most wonderful Irish accent and the audience respond by singing the choruses. As great as the studio recording is, every time I hear the song now, I’m disappointed when her demand to “C’mon” is missing. The follow up Dreaming My Dreams is an even more quiet and reflective song with a subtlety of playing that is just as powerful and an extremely effective vehicle for the dominance and clarity of her vocals. In early interviews she was described as ‘The Voice’ and this bootleg is the audio proof.

The set builds up slowly and is very effectively paced, gaining momentum and increasing to a crescendo through Waltzing Back and Zombie, the final explosive drum beats extremely effective in imparting the song’s message. Pretty and Not Sorry wind the tempo down a notch before the pace kicks up through to So Cold In Ireland sending the Munich audience home satisfied.

A month prior to hearing this show if I had been asked to name three Cranberries songs it would have been a struggle to name a third after Linger and Zombie and that despite buying the debut release back in 1993. If you have not heard them for some time, then this bootleg cannot fail to impress. There are a few early performances available, some incomplete, those have a more balanced mix and sharper pleasing sound but they take second place to this perfect example of the relationship and interaction between a band and its audience, that makes it compelling for the bootleg listener. A show that is unforgettable.

The original notes are included below for the definitive relling of how this precious artefact came into circulation.

"Not often does it happen that a "holy grail version" of a tape that you've been listening to forever gets laid down right in front of you, from out of nowhere.Incredibly, just that happened a few weeks ago in a small private forum.

A very kind soul, himself a Joy Division fan from almost day one, uploaded without much ado a tape he's had for years but (in his own words) 'never could find the right moment to let it go' - a transfer from the original pre-FM master reels of the legendary, much bootlegged performance of JOY DIVISION at the Paradiso in Amsterdam on january 11, 1980 - arguably their best recorded live performance (at least to my ears), but definitely in the top 5 and with absolute certainty the best sounding one. Well, now it sounds even better!

And it's not called "The Definitive Edition" for nothing - the first version of this show that I had was the "Last Order" bootleg which sounded very very good and got me hooked to this show instantly. Over the years and with a few partial re-broadcasts more and more versions showed up, including a so-called "official release" on the "Re-Fractured" box set that ridiculously included gaps between all the tracks and didn't sound any better than most other versions floating around.

This is to my knowledge the very first time the full show has been transfered from the actual pre-FM master reels properly. And I am very proud and happy to be able to take this into the public, with the kind permission of the same kind soul who uploaded this at the mentioned private forum.
All thanks go to him for unearthing and making available to everybody finally, after 32 years, one of the most important recordings in post punk music history (and I'm sure some people would argue rock music history)!  Turn it up and ENJOY!" (surfling august 2012)
