#06 The Specials - Paradiso, Amsterdam 1980 (Flac)

The Specials - Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands
21 January 1980

Lineage: FM Radio 2 NL, 9 Jan. 2009 (Denon TU-460) > PC > CD Wave (track splits) > Flac 6 (TLH)
Time: 50:45

Re-broadcast on Dutch radio station, Radio 2 almost nineteen years later, perhaps in celebration of the news that the band would be touring later in the year to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Sadly the old divisions would remain and Jerry Dammers their main songwriter would not take part with both sides claiming different stories as to the reason why.

Back in time, early in 1980 and riding on the crest of the massive success of the 2 tone revival we can hear the band on their European tour playing the debut album complete with just the exception of Little Bitch.  Add in singles like Gangsters and Rat Race and you have a perfect live document of the band.

As the reformed Specials are still going strong and playing live dates this year it's a good time to post this one. Stunning sound quality and performance.

#02 RYAN ADAMS - Live at Das Haus (October 17, 2006) (Flac)

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
October 17, 2006
Das Haus
Ludwigshafen, Germany

Sebastian Boschert has made a stunning board recording with sound quality better than many official live album releases. The performance by Ryan and the band is magnificent.

A third of the set list features songs from the 2005 releases Jacksonville City Nights and Cold Roses. Three tracks are from the third album Demolition (2002). Freeway To The Canyon is a Neil Casal song - guitarist with the Cardinals and fine singer-songwriter in his own right. Bird Song is a cover version originally written by Jerry Garcia in tribute to Janis Joplin after her death. It appeared on Jerry’s Garcia album (1972) and was played live by the Grateful Dead during the early seventies. Blue Hotel appeared a year later on the Follow The Lights EP (2007) and Trouble on Wheels remains unreleased.
The remaining third are of songs that first appeared on Ryan’s first two albums Heartbreaker (2000) and Gold (2001)

Tracks 7-15 w/ Mariachi Luz De Luna

This source is a completely different mix than the circulating FM copy (FM is incomplete - missing 2 songs). Probably the safety mix given to the band after the show.

------------------------------------------------------------

I requested some comments about this special show. Here is what Joey Burns had to say about it:

"Calexico and members of Mariachi Luz de Luna travelled roughly 1,000 kilometers the night before our performance at Roskilde in Denmark on July 1, 2000. I am sure we had been up nearly the whole night partying and watching movies on the bus and were fast asleep upon arrival to the festival. When we all woke the next morning there was an unusual somber tone in the air as we began hearing the news and details of the tragedy that occured the night before during Pearl Jam's set on the main stage. We couldn't believe it and were all in shock. How could so many people die at one of Europe's most renown festivals?

Some bands decided to cancel and there was confusion at first whether or not the festival would continue. For a while we were all on hold not knowing what would happen.

It was a very difficult decision, but the promoters of the festival decided to go on as scheduled.

Chan Marshall of Cat Power played before us early that afternoon all by herself on the same stage as us and delivered a very heartfelt and moving set. She tapped into the spirit that everyone in the whole festival grounds was feeling with her soulful voice and minimal accompaniment. After experiencing her set, John Convertino and I decided to begin our set as a two piece (drums and guitar) and play an instrumental meditation in honor of those who had passed away. From there we slowly built up the dynamics of the set and it was clear that even though the crowd was in a state of mourning, they also wanted to celebrate, and so when the surprise guests of Mariachi Luz de Luna walked onstage, the whole crowd lit up. It was an amazing set, one we will never forget."

Thanks to Calexico for letting this out of the archives and for allowing this to be seeded into the community!

Adios until next time,
Jim
